Did you know – Tasmanian devils have the strongest bite per body size of any mammal?
In this video, we follow carnivore keepers Steph and Nick as they provide a nutritious and enriching meal for the three devils at the Zoo and discuss how we care for them.
Purinina is the name for Tasmanian devils in palawa kani, the language of Tasmanian Aborigine – and is where they get their beautiful names Nita, Nawnta and Luna.
The purinina at Auckland Zoo play an important role as advocates for their wild counterparts in Tasmania. We’re proud to be partnered with Australia’s Save the Tasmanian Devil Program and their work ensuring a future for this endangered species, which is under threat from the deadly Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD).
