Keeping our animals healthy and happy.

It's a huge job, every individual animal in our care needs different things to be in a state of positive welfare.

Learn about how we look after our animals here at the Zoo and give them the best care we possibly can.

Here at Auckland Zoo our most important job is taking care of our animals every day in a way that ensures their overall wellbeing.

To help us get this right we rely on the Five Domains Model of Animal Welfare. This model is based on the latest science in wildlife conservation. The four domains of Health, Behaviour, Nutrition and Environment are the areas in which we, as animal carers, can take positive action that has an impact on overall Wellbeing (the fifth domain).

A range of different learning experiences offered by our expert educators allow participants to interact with this model in practice – including looking at habitat design, and the different roles within the Zoo that are important for animal care.

Session duration: Sessions with a Zoo Educator will last for approx. 45 minutes. Outside this time you are free to explore the Zoo. Most schools plan to arrive for 9:30am opening and leave by 2:00pm.
