Auckland Zoo offers a range of primary and intermediate education sessions that involve interactive and hands on learning where students will come away with knowledge about our animals at the Zoo and understand their importance in the world.
Classes are age specific with clear learning outcomes for each age range.

Porcupine quills, colourful feathers, and scaly skins. Using a selection of artefacts we will place animals into groups and explore the ways that the covering of an animal may help it hide, keep warm, be protected, or even fly. This session will include observations of animals in the Zoo grounds

We will observe some animals at the Zoo to see how parts of their bodies help them move, find food and stay safe in their habitats. Younger students will explore with animal artefacts to identify how animals’ bodies are different and suited to the place where they live. Older students will investigate the ways in which animals protect themselves from the weather and from predators, find or catch their food and attract a mate.
We will also explore how changes in habitats due to human activities may drastically affect the survival of wildlife. Examples of conservation projects may be used to illustrate how the Zoo is helping to protect animals in their wild habitats.

We will take a short journey through selected habitats in Te Wao Nui so students may identify and observe several different NZ animals.
Younger students will learn about special features these animals possess which help them to survive in their particular habitat while older students will explore the impact of environmental change and how breeding programmes and restoration work can help our NZ species to survive in the wild.

We will look at how Auckland Zoo cares for our amazing animals. By observing an animal in its enclosure, students will learn about animals needs, both at the zoo and in the wild. Find out what the Zoo does to help protect kiwi in the wild. Students will explore with activities in our Discovery room and make observations at animals enclosures. Examples of conservation projects, both in NZ and overseas, will also illustrate how the zoo is helping to fight extinction and preserve biodiversity.

Human activities are threatening animals and their habitats in many parts of the world today. Using a selection of artefacts, students will discover the major threats for endangered species and explore how human activities are impacting wildlife. Students will also observe endangered species in the zoo grounds. What actions can be taken to help prevent extinctions? A specific conservation project, such as 21st Century Tiger, will be highlighted and examples of personal conservation actions will be discussed.
